Ouch

Every now and then, things feel really bad. In general it goes something like this. There鈥檚 something I鈥檝e put a lot into. A person, an activity, a job, an investment, it could be anything. Whatever it is, I鈥檝e put a lot of time, emotion or energy into it. I have this idea of how things are going to go. Except that鈥檚 not how things go at all.

Programming

We are living in a digital age (just in case you hadn't noticed). When people point that out to me it usually聽feels like such a mundane observation. My gut response is that computers aren't anything remarkable, I use them every day

In the room

There鈥檚 a song by Flight of the Concords called 鈥渢he most beautiful girl in the room鈥. The song is aimed at love songs lyrics which constantly refer to a hypothetical partner as the most attractive person in the whole wide world. Probably the most memorable line of the song is, 鈥淚f you were on the street, depending on the street, you鈥檇 definitely be in the top three.鈥

Messaging My Grandparents

I often get quite wrapped up in my own life and forget to think about getting in contact with聽the family members who I don't see on a daily basis. That includes聽my grandparents. I do see my grandparents, but it's usually limited to special occasions like weddings, birthdays and聽Christmas. It suddenly occurred to me that it would probably mean a lot to my grandparents if I just sent a short email聽to show that I was thinking of them.

Dear 2020

Space

Dear 2020, you were definitely not the year most of us wanted or asked for as we were bidding 2019 farewell, but here you are. I鈥檓 grateful though, very grateful. I really wouldn鈥檛 have learned any of the things I know now if it weren鈥檛 for the curveballs this year has thrown my way. As the saying goes, 鈥榝ine weather never made a skilled sailor鈥. It鈥檚 true, as clich茅 as it sounds. (Although I still sometimes wish none of us needed stormy weather to become savvy sailors.) Below are some of the critical things I learned from this year, but also some of the key takeaways from a recent workshop I attended with my HDR peers and new graduates. It was also fortunate that two senior academics, who were also PhD supervisors, were able to join us to share their postgraduate journeys and the different forms of 鈥榙isruption鈥 that they had to navigate through. Why am I sharing this now, at the end of the year? It鈥檚 because although most students have finished their semester and exams are slowly concluding too, a lot of HDR students like me will need to be mindful that we give ourselves a chance to have a proper break during the summer break even though we can be silently plugging away with our writing and work.
