Showing love from a distance
"Social distancing" has become a commonly used phrase. We are avoiding physical contact with other people as much as possible. Standing two metres apart. No hugs. No unnecessary gatherings. These measures are necessary to flatten the curve and keep as many people healthy as possible.听
But humans are social creatures. We need regular social interaction and physical affection for our own well-being. Being apart from others feels so wrong. When there is a crisis happening, my natural instinct is to draw closer to other people for support. Maybe we need to call it听. We need to be there for each other now more than ever.听听
How do we show love from a distance?听
I think love from a distance is about the little things. Sending people small messages checking in with them. Sharing memes with each other. Calling family and friends regularly just to say hi. Playing an off-key song to a friend on the ukulele. Dropping groceries to family members. Offering help to your neighbours. Watching the same movies and comparing notes. If you live with people, spending more time with those you live with. Checking that the elderly people near you are doing okay. Cuddling a pet. Telling people you love them.听
These little things are the things that will get us through. We've got to keep each other physically safe, but also resist the forces of isolation at this strange time!听
