Activities you can do alone

Whether it's during a break or weekend, busy workloads mean sometimes you just can鈥檛 find the perfect time to hang out with friends. So, what can you do by yourself until the perfect moment comes?

When you鈥檙e free, your friends aren鈥檛 and when you aren鈥檛, they are 鈥 it鈥檚 a vicious cycle. I know this all too well. So instead of waiting around for my friends to escape from the grip of their busy lives, I鈥檝e decided to take myself out on a date! I won鈥檛 lie, it is a bit awkward at first. I鈥檝e always been terrified of people looking at me and going, 鈥減oor girl, she鈥檚 so lonely and helpless!鈥 but really, I don鈥檛 think they even care. Especially after Covid, I suppose people are getting used to going out and doing things alone.聽

So here鈥檚 a list of things I think are cool to visit or do by yourself!

Visit MOD

is definitely a good place to go hang out with yourself. They have heaps of interactive activities that you can do all over the building which I find help occupy my time and thoughts so I鈥檓 not constantly worried about what the group of old ladies are thinking of my solitude.聽

I went to MOD recently to check out their new exhibition called Invisibility and not for a moment did I feel bored or anxious about being there alone. The data and algorithm part of their exhibition was my favourite!聽

Watch a Movie

Another fun thing to do alone. Again, it occupies your time and thoughts a lot so you won鈥檛 feel bored the moment you step into the cinema (unless you choose the wrong movie). Also, people are probably just as consumed with the movie as much as you are, so I鈥檓 sure they wouldn鈥檛 even give the fact that you鈥檙e there alone a second thought.聽

I remember the first time I went to the cinema alone. It was in spring, and I went to the premiere of The French Dispatch at . I was a bit nervous and sad for myself when I saw the super packed theatre and that everyone around me seemed to be sitting with their friends but once the movie started rolling, I gradually became more comfortable being alone. By the end of it, I felt so refreshed and proud of myself for going alone. It was an unforgettable experience for sure!

Watch a Musical

You get the gist now, I hope. The key is to do something engaging and what is more engaging than watching a musical! The catchy tunes, colourful costumes and bizarre characters will definitely pull you into their world. If you have the chance to catch , without a doubt do it! I cried, I laughed, I sang, I cheered. I鈥檓 also thinking of going to the musical this June.

Write a caf茅 review

Oh, we know how daunting it is to eat by yourself. I know I was horrified after spending years sitting at the school鈥檚 cafeteria with my friends. But I鈥檝e learnt that it鈥檚 acceptable to eat alone, many people do it 鈥 and it can be quite peaceful, might I add. My favourite thing to do when I鈥檓 eating at a caf茅 or restaurant alone is to bring along my notebook and write an extensive review of the food and place. Think of the food critique from Ratatouille. I will literally go all in with the review too as I genuinely try to write the way a professional food critique would.

It takes time to feel comfortable being in your own company. It surely took me some time to get used to it, and sometimes it doesn鈥檛 work out for you because you鈥檙e more of a people person and that鈥檚 totally cool too!聽
