British Film Festival 2020
Film lovers rejoice: the annual British Film Festival (BFF) has arrived for its seventh year, playing in Adelaide at Palace Nova (Eastend and聽Prospect)聽from 10-29 November.
Of all the nation-specific film festivals that reach Adelaide each year, the BFF is among the less lucrative. That isn鈥檛 a shot at the quality of the festival鈥檚 lineup (on the contrary, it鈥檚 jam-packed) rather, it鈥檚 a comment on the fact that, unlike other festivals which showcase flicks that viewers might not otherwise get a chance to see, the BFF features a number of films that are certainly destined for a subsequent mainstream release. Nonetheless, the BFF offers viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in all things UK for a few weeks; a blur of country estates, trips to the seaside, and wistful stares between lovers. Besides, in 2020, when new films are few and far between, just the idea of returning to a cinema is enough to bring a tear to my eye.
This year鈥檚 festival catalogue includes twenty-two films in total, many of them featuring some of Britain鈥檚 most celebrated stars. There are two films, in particular, which are highly anticipated: Ammonite, an 1840s romance which stars Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, and Supernova, which follows a couple struggling with an early-onset dementia diagnosis and stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci.
Other highlights include Misbehaviour, which stars Keira Knightley as one of a group of聽feminist protestors in 1970s London, and The Nest, a thriller which follows Jude Law as an entrepreneur who moves his wife, Carrie Coon, and their children from America to a country manor in England. There鈥檚 also a number of films set in the World War II era, including two historical dramas, Six Minutes to Midnight and A Call to Spy; and a seaside romance, Summerland.
With only a few weeks to go, why not head to your nearest cinema to enjoy the best of what BFF has to offer. That鈥檚 where I鈥檒l be, and I鈥檒l be covering it on the blog, so be sure to stay tuned.
