How you can help look after the planet
The world temperature is increasing, forests are burning, animals are dying, sea levels are rising; and this is what you can do about it.
Climate change. It is a huge issue in our current day that we could all be taking this more seriously. And while we may not be able to significantly help as just one person, there a few easy changes we can all make to our daily routine to make a difference.
So, here is a list of five tips and easy changes you can make to limit your carbon footprint and do your part to help save the planet:
- Public transport: The emissions of vehicles are one of the main causes of global warming. Taking public transport or another form of transport can make a big difference over time in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Taking a bus, tram, or train, or walking or biking to your destination is a great idea. Buy a concession metro card for cheaper rides and save on petrol while you are at it.
- Recycling: Get educated and recycle more! Things like paper, hard plastics, fruit and vegetables, and bottles; can all be recycled in different bins. Cardboard, paper, and hard plastics with no food inside can all be put in the recycling bin. And fruit and vegetable scraps can be put in the green bin. Bottles can also be taken to a bottle dump and recycled for ten cents each! But make sure to take all the bottle caps off, and put these in a milk carton with the lid on, that can also be put in the recycling bin. Try to also avoid as much soft plastic as possible, as this can not be recycled.
- Reuse: Sell or donate clothes, books, or other things in your house that you don't need anymore. The university holidays are a perfect time to declutter your life, and people less fortunate would certainly benefit from this. Donating and re-using helps limit the countless amount of landfill created each year.
- Save electricity: Switching to LED light bulbs, turning off your lights when you're not in the room, and hanging out your washing in the sun instead of using a dryer; are all little changes you can make to help limit your negative environmental impact.
- Food: Incorporate more vegetables in your diet and consume less meat and dairy if you can. This will lower your environmental impact, and could also be beneficial for your health. However, make sure to check your doctor or a nutritionist before severely changing your diet, and confirm you are still intaking all of the necessary food groups. Shopping local from farmers or at the Adelaide Central Market lowers natural resource consumption as well.
