Hacking Christmas casual jobs
A guide to landing a Christmas job based on my experience.
Finding a temporary job after finishing another hectic semester can be as challenging as it seems. Finding a position as a Christmas casual is no exception Many people look for work over the break, often seeking retail positions in the city.
So, how can you secure a Christmas casual position? Last Christmas, I was hired as a casual at a well-known retail brand, where I worked for two months and gained wonderful experience (as well as some vouchers). From this experience, in this article, I will share some of the methods that might be useful for you:
- Look for job advertisements: If you keep an eye on the shop fronts, you will notice that sometimes the store manager puts the recruitment post on the window. That's your cue to enter the shop, talk to the manager, and drop your resume. If they find you fit into the store, they might immediately give you the shift for the next week.
- Leverage online tools: There are many online tools that you can use to apply for Christmas jobs. The most popular ones are Indeed and Seek. Although I have never gotten any position by using these online tools, I know that some of my friends acquired either part-time or casual jobs by submitting online applications. If you have a strong working history or language skills to showcase, these platforms might be your best bet.
- Gather information from friends: While you can find information on Christmas casual positions independently, the best way to find the position is to gather advice from your friends. If they also experienced job hunting recently and underwent several interviews with different stores, you might be able to learn which companies are more likely to accept you.
While the cost of living is rising which adds stress to our daily lives, I believe that the most important thing is not to rush. Sometimes, you will not get accepted for the position or even receive any results for the application. But do not let this get you down!
One of my friends in Melbourne sent her resume to hundreds (literally) of stores and finally got the position from only two! Those are the odds you might face. So, follow the instructions above and form an ally with your friends to help each other find the positions! I hope this Christmas will be a meaningful time for you.
