Favourite places to refresh
Some places in Adelaide I find reinvigorating.Â
When I am almost overwhelmed by my reports, I appreciate the ‘typical’ Australian culture that emphasizes not sacrificing enjoyment in daily life for the sake of schoolwork.
Reflecting on my first semester at the university, I realized that I actively incorporated this idea into my student life and tried to have ample rest whenever possible. Here are some places in Adelaide that I went to refresh during the semester:
- AGSA: This is one of the sites I often visited during the semester. From classic to modern, Oriental to Western, there are a variety of works that can stimulate you from burning out of work. My favorite is 'We are all flesh' in Gallery 13 by artist Berlinde de Bruyckere. I was in awe of its brutality when I first found this work, but now it reminds me of the fragility of ourselves every time I see it.
- Adelaide Central Market: It may sound counterintuitive, but I find going to the market thoroughly enjoyable. Every time I go there, I always discover new things: sometimes they sell bacon cheaper and bargain fruits on Saturday afternoon. I recently got strawberries and mangoes at a discount, and both tasted so nice!Â
- Adelaide Himeji Garden: Although this is a bit far from my accommodation, I enjoy discovering the connection with my home country by going to this garden. Some people might say this is too small, but for me, this space is big enough to meditate and relax for a while.
- Mount Lofty: It is such a privilege that we are living in this regional city where we can easily access nature. Mount Lofty has always been on my list to visit when I get stuck at work. Not only that, but I also try to climb this mountain every weekend to refresh my body and get ready for another week.
So, what is your favourite refreshing space? Have you ever visited any of those places above? I hope that this post will help you find a new way to alleviate your stress from daunting tasks at the university.
In the upcoming summer break, it may also be a good idea to expand your list of places to visit for relaxation! Take a stroll around your neighbourhood and try to find your favourite spots. For international students, I also encourage you to explore the 'Discover Adelaide' section on the university’s website.
