The power of music

A page of sheet music

Every since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with music. And it has changed my life.

Whenever I’d get picked up from school, music would be playing on the car stereo. And whenever I’d walk into the kitchen at home, music would be playing on our speaker. My mum used to tell me all the time when I was little, ‘music has the ability to get you through many challenges in your life.’

And now that I’m older, music is still a big part of my life. I click play on my Spotify when I’m getting ready for the day, or play music through my headphones when I’m walking through campus along to the beat of the song.

Music also has the ability to completely turn my mood upside down. If I am not feeling the best or not having the greatest of days, I turn on a happy and upbeat song, and immediately feel better. Singing and dancing along to my playlist is one of my favourite hobbies.

Music can not only change my mood completely, but it also it makes me feel seen. The way artists express their feelings and thoughts through their songs and lyrics can be so relatable. And knowing that there is someone out their who could be going through a similar situation, and hearing how they express their emotions about it, makes my own feelings feel validated. Artists can describe my emotions exactly, and in a way I would never even think about.Ìý

I have also met new people and grown closer to my friends through music. Having a favourite artist or band to bond over and listen together is so much fun.

It is crazy to think about how much a collection of sounds, rhythms and melody, can affect my life so much, but it does. My mum’s advice turned out to be true; I have gotten to where I am now with the help of music.
