A wellbeing sign-off

Wellbeing at Adelaide University has become not only a nice thought but a necessity for students.

Even in the few years that I have been studying at this university, the perspective, presence, and conversation around student wellbeing has only gotten better and better. I have been over the moon to see the growth in events, social media coverage, volunteer groups, services on campus and connection with students.

I have had a lot of ups and downs over my time at university. I’ve struggled with living independently, finding accommodation, changing friend groups, changing interests and career ambitions, relationships, and keeping up with my general mental and physical health and wellbeing. Despite a lot of setbacks, I think I have learnt and reflected on a few things.

Having a safe place is important. This can be a safe place within a group of friends or at your home or in your garden. Over my time at university, I have found myself struggling more with my wellbeing when I have been without safe spaces. There are so many aspects to wellbeing, but I think you can not underestimate the value of a safe space.

Another simple luxury is taking time. Time to rest, recharge and have a quiet day in. Of course, there is the need to keep active and eat well, but sometimes, I think if you just need a day to recharge and reconnect with some family or practice a hobby then just go for it.

While I always like to see student services on campus, I have become acutely aware of all the hard working and passionate people behind the scenes. I am excited to keep reading the student What messes with your head blog and watch student health and wellbeing continue to grow and thrive on campus. If you can get involved and engage with events and services that is a great first step, and if you ever have the time to thank the people who give their time and expertise to the university then I know they would appreciate it. To all the team at student wellbeing a big thanks and keep up the great work. Finally, to everyone who reads the blog thank you! Stay engaged and reach out if you need support -you’ll always find friendly support with student wellbeing.
