Met Gala review
The Met Gala is undisputedly the largest and most anticipated fashion event of the year.
Celebrities, designers, fashion people and as of late, social media influencers will dress up in their gorgeous (though some are questionable) outfits according to a specific theme – this year's was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. So, I thought what fun it would be to walk you through some of the yays and nays of this year’s outfits. Besides, who’s more qualified to talk about high fashion than a uni student who is writing this in her leggings and One Direction sweatshirt?
Timothée ChalametÂ
Chairing the gala this year, Timothée served the red carpet with an all-white moment. I love Timmy but I felt like he didn’t quite nail the WOW factor. It’s like something that could’ve made it a lot better was missing but I couldn’t quite put a finger on what that might be. I loved the contrast between the cropped blazer and loose sweats though! Oh, and of course the Converse. It threw me off a little at first but then I get it, Converse is such an iconic American brand that transcends generations and borders so I guess that was his homage to America.
Anok Yai
One of my favourite looks of the evening. The overnight-college-student-turned-model channelled Josephine Baker, the iconic American-born French entertainer and civil rights activist from her hair to her black dress to her feathered boa. The embroidered stars flowing down her dress also seemed like a nod to the stars on the American flag.
Kim and Kanye West
Head to toe in black, and I mean that literally, they were only wearing black fabric covering their whole body and face. I guess they’re still out there promoting DONDA.
Addison RaeÂ
I know we were all shocked that Miss Rae got invited even after her questionable 7 Days, 7 Looks video but I’ll be nice and say that for a first timer in both the fashion world and pop culture, she didn’t do too bad on the red carpet. It was definitely a little boring for the gala but then again, countless celebrity men get away with wearing black suits every year so I think we should cut her some slack. The funny thing was someone on Twitter pointed out that her dress was exactly like Kourtney Kardashian’s 2019 Christmas dress which in my opinion, meant that she nailed the theme perfectly as the Kardashians are basically American royalty. What a way to pay homage to American pop culture.
Emily Blunt
The moment I saw her starry headpiece, I knew she was inspired by Hedy Lamarr in Ziegfeld Girl. Her dress was lovely too, but the headpiece was the one for me.
Billie EilishÂ
She was giving Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Holiday Barbie in her off-shoulder ball gown. Her inspirations were crystal clear and she looked good especially with the red lipstick to top it off but something about her hair did not sit right with me. It didn’t look like it was styled properly – somewhat rushed – but I don’t know, maybe that was the look they were going for.Â
Quannah Chasinghorse
Saved the best for last. The 19-year-old model and activist turned heads and drew the attention of attendees and fashion commentators alike in her tribute to her Indigenous ancestry Hän Gwich’in and Native American Oglala Lakota. She wore little to no makeup to highlight the traditional face tattoo and was adorned in authentic Navajo jewellery. She looked stunning and she understood the assignment.Â
Overall, this year’s gala felt like you either really nail it or you don’t. The 2018 Met Gala was still the best one in my opinion.
