Turnitin AI Writing Detection Preview
On April 4, 2023, Turnitin released an AI writing detection preview across several products, including the Turnitin Feedback Studio and Originality products, which are integrated within MyUni.
The AI detection capabilities are built into the existing similarity report workflow, which means you will see this automatically within similarity reports without taking any additional steps. The AI writing detection indicator shows an overall percentage of the text that may have been AI-generated, and the accompanying report highlights the segments predicted to be AI-written.ÌýStudents cannot see the AI score.
The current detector is trained for long-form English content and can detect GPT-3/3.5 and ChatGPT signatures. Turnitin intends to expand and iterate the AI writing functionality to keep pace with evolving AI writing technology. Note that at this time the AI detection tool will only work for content submitted in English.
Similar to Originality reports, this is an indicator that GPT may have been used, this does not mean a student has used AI in their submission or committed academic misconduct. The marker's expertise is needed to evaluate the AI score and the assignment in context.Ìý
The AI score alone should not be grounds for an academic integrity report; reports should be supported by other concerns and evidence.ÌýIf you have a concern about the use of artificial intelligence by a student, you can contactÌý²â´Ç³Ü°ùÌýschool AIOsÌýÌýthe academic integrity team before submitting an academic integrity report.
