Windows 11

Windows 11听is听Microsoft鈥檚 latest major release听of its operating system, succeedingWindows 10.听Windows 11 emphasises security, creativity, and data protection across devices .

Microsoft will on October 14 2025. Machines still running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates or support for standard University software. ITDS will be rolling out Windows 11 to supported computers across the University to replace Windows 10 prior to its support ending.

  • Windows 10 End of Support

    Microsoft will on October 14 2025. Machines still running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates or support for standard University software. If not upgraded to Windows 11, these systems will be subject to restricted or disabled network and service access.

    All computers not upgraded after Windows 10 support ends will be considered unsupported and represent a significant security vulnerability. These systems may be subject to restricted or disabled network and service access.

  • Windows 11 Compatibility

    There are for Windows 11. Devices that don't meet these requirements cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.听

    • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on听
    • RAM: 4 gigabyte (GB)
    • Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device
    • System firmware: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
    • Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver

  • How to Upgrade University Staff Computers to Windows 11

    If your computer is Windows 11 compatible, there are two options to upgrade options:

    Clean Build (Recommended)

    A clean build of Windows 11 will give you a fresh install of Windows. You will need to be available for 4 hours for our technicians to back up your Windows 10 computer, wipe the drive/s, rebuild it to Windows 11 and restore your files, favourites etc.听

    To request a clean build of your staff computer, log a request via the . Navigate to Request Something > Something Else and enter:

    • Summary: Rebuild My Computer to Windows 11
    • Additional Details:听Add your current site location, building, floor and room number. Days of the week you are available onsite during business hours with 4 hours availability and the of your computer you would like to upgrade.听

    InPlace Upgrade听

    An in place upgrade will upgrade your Windows 10 computer to Windows 11. This is a self service option via the Software Center is available now.听

    • On your Windows 10 computer, open the Software Center. Then navigate to Operating Systems > Windows 11 In-Place Upgrade.

    We recommend being connected to the University wired network and to allow up to run overnight . After the upgrade finishes any pending Windows 11 Updates and drivers for your computer will download, and will require a restart to install. This may occur 2-3 times.听听

  • Students University Computers and Windows 11

    1. From February 2024, non-teaching student labs such as the students hubs on each campus will be upgraded to Windows 11
    2. Student meeting rooms will be progressively upgraded to Windows 11 throughout 2024.
    3. Student teaching labs/rooms (non-CATS) will be progressively听upgraded to Windows 11 throughout 2024.
    4. Teaching student CATS labs/rooms will be progressively听upgraded to Windows 11 during 2025.
  • New Staff Computers

    New computers purchased from the University's computer supplier will come with Windows 11 pre-installed starting from March 2024.

  • Meeting Rooms

    Meeting rooms will be progressively upgraded to Windows 11 throughout 2024.

  • Common Teaching Areas

    Common Teaching Areas will be progressively upgraded to Windows 11 throughout 2024 and 2025.
