Discovery Event with Cheryl Hoskin

Discover one of the Library鈥檚 most beautiful rare books with Cheryl Hoskin:听Berthe Hoola van Nooten鈥檚听Fleurs fruits et feuillages choisis de l鈥檌le de Java,听published in 1880.

Cheryl retired last year after 17 years as Special Collections Librarian at the 成人大片 Library. She says she was privileged to have overseen the Adopt-a-Book program from its inception. Cheryl personally adopted this magnificent book. The 40 brilliantly coloured life-sized plates of the fruits and flowers commonly found in Java have been described as some of the finest examples of chromolithography. Cheryl will also talk on the development of this relatively new technique, an exciting milestone in the history of colour printing.

Despite her relatively amateur status, Berthe is acknowledged as a talented and respected early woman botanical artist. Cheryl will also talk about Berthe鈥檚 fascinating life: as wife to a judge who travelled between Surinam and Batavia, a teacher who established five schools in America and Java, and an impoverished widow who published her art to support her five children.
