Temporary changes to accessing Special Collections

Books

The redevelopment of Level 1 means that Rare Books and Special Collections will be operating out of a temporary new site on Level 2 of the Barr Smith Library as of Monday 6 November 2017 until mid-2018.

While the opening hours will remain the same we’ve had to make some changes to how the materials are accessed (and there will be some times during which the materials can’t be accessed).

Temporary new home on Level 2 of the Barr Smith Library

The temporary office and reading room area is located on Level 2 of the Barr Smith Library, and can be accessed from the main corridor linking the northern and southern ends of the building (officially the room is known as Room 215). If you aren’t sure where to go please speak with an Ask Library team member.

Rare Books & Special Collections’ opening hours remain the same (Monday to Friday, 1 pm to 4 pm), although Cheryl and her team are often available for consultation outside of regular opening hours

Accessing materials

The nature of the building work on Level 1 means that there are changes to how materials can be accessed, and at specific times access to the collections will be restricted. The major period of disruption will be for the remainder of November 2017, during whichÌýtime materials from Rare Books & Special Collections will not be accessible.ÌýÌý

From the beginning of December 2017, you will need to request any Rare Books & Special Collections items that you would like to view. Requests can be madeÌýin several ways:

Please get your requests in ahead of time, as we needÌý24-hours notice in order to retrieve the items. We will let you know by email once the item is ready to viewÌýin the temporary reading area on Level 2. Please note that it is unlikely that we will be able to provide access to large quantities of materials (large sets, manuscripts and archival materials) – please contact Rare Books & Special Collections directly for more information.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these temporary arrangements and will try and limit the disruption as much as possible. If you have any questions please contact Rare Books & Special Collections onÌý8313 5224 or emailÌýlibrary_special@adelaide.edu.au.
