Case Study: Learning what is on the inside, from the outside – bringing laboratory practicals online
A collaborative project between Learning Enhancement and Innovation and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
Overview:
Dr Danijela Menicanin, Senior Lecturer from the Adelaide Medical School is the Course Coordinator for first year course, Human Anatomy and Physiology. This course is a first-year topic that is done by many students as it is a pre-requisite for several program streams in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The course has significant practical elements but due to the current COVID-19 situation, holding face-to-face laboratory practicals is not possible. It was recognised that in order to teach this class, the practical elements of this course would need to be brought online, and new and creative ways to engage and interact with students would need to be found.

Approach:
Dr Danijela Menicanin reached out to the Learning Enhancement and Innovation Media Production team to assist her and colleague, Dr Kent Algate, with the filming of laboratory practicals for the Human Anatomy and Physiology course.
The filming took place in the Ray Last Anatomy Laboratory and was shot over three hours. Danijela and Kent had organised and prepared all their content, so the Media Production Team were able to set up two cameras and begin the filming straight away.
Results:
The Media Production team then cut, edited and produced 4 videos. These four videos include:
- Bones
- Joints
- Muscles
- Nervous System
These videos are a condensed version of laboratory practicals and have been used to replace practical face-to-face laboratory sessions. These resources are currently being used by 495 students.

Feedback:
Here is some feedback from one of the students in the course:
“I just wanted to show my appreciation for the Lab videos about the Bones and the Muscles. It was really interesting to see the theory being put into practice. For someone like me who thrives on learningÌýand consolidating information in a more pragmatic sense, it really helps with visualising how different components of the Bone and Muscle interplay with each other. Rather than just remembering piece by piece.â€Ìý
