Adelaide Graduate Centre Drop-In Session at Roseworthy

Professor John Williams, Dean of Graduate Studies, and the Adelaide Graduate Centre Team will be at Roseworthy Campus on Thursday 24 May 2018.

The Dean will host a Drop-in Session for students currently enrolled in a Bachelor or Honours Degree, to learn more about study options for Higher Degrees by Research, as well as scholarship opportunities.  Current HDR students are also invited to come and meet the team, and to discuss any issues regarding their candidature or scholarship.

Staff are most welcome.

Mid-Year Round - Domestic Applicants - Research Admission and Scholarships

The Mid-Year Round makes available a limited number of research scholarships opportunities. All applicants will be considered for every scholarship made available in the round for which they are eligible.

Overview Admission and Scholarship, OR Scholarship Only Applications
Open: 9 April - 31 May 2018.

  • Applicants must commence candidature between 1 July and 30 November of the year of application to be eligible for scholarship
  • Research Training Program (RTP) and University Divisional Scholarships available
  • Applicants of the previous Major Round are not eligible to apply
  • The online application form is made available during the specified period only
  • Outcomes expected by the end of July

Launch of the Online Core Component of the Structured Program (CCSP)

The Graduate Centre is pleased to announce that the CCSP will be available as an online form from Monday 21 May.  Students will have the option of completing either the paper-based or online form up until Friday 15 June, and from this date on it will be compulsory for students, supervisors and School Approvers to use the online form.

Access to the online form and further information about its functionality will be available on our website from the 21 May, and emails sent from the system to advise that the CCSP is due to be completed will also contain a link to the new system from this date.


CaRST Online

We are pleased to announce that HDR students now have access to to find, book and record their CaRST activities. All students who have a CaRST milestone are required to use CaRST Online from now on. Other HDR students will still use the system to register for CaRST activities. Activities that were managed centrally have been automatically migrated for HDR students. For all other activities, students can either directly add them to their own records or send their Training Summary with the missing activities highlighted via the Online Record Amendment form and their record will be amended for them. This service will be available until 8 June 2018.

CaRST Online replaces the Training Summary and ePortfolio, which are a requirement for the CCSP/Major Review/Annual Review. Students are required to submit a PDF of the CaRST Record page in CaRST Online (along with their Development Plan) going forward, but if the CaRST Online record is not up-to-date the AGC will continue to accept the Training Summary and ePortfolio over the next month. Report on AGC's First 'Drop-In' Session at Waite Campus

The first 'Drop-In' session was held at Waite Campus on 26 April 2018. The Dean of Graduate Studies Professor Williams and the AGC Team met with the Head of School and Postgraduate Coordinators at the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine.  At the drop-in session, the team met with students to talk about the HDR pathways, scholarship opportunities and candidature matters.


Three Minute Thesis

Have you considered participating in the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition? 3MT is a great way to develop your communication skills and profile your research. It's a competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.

Shut Up and Write! for HDR Students

Are you looking for a quiet place to achieve some focused writing? We invite HDR students to Shut Up and Write! Organised by the Adelaide Graduate Centre, each 1 hour session involves writing in 25 minute bursts, with a chance to socialise and meet new people in the breaks. You will work on your own tasks, there are no set exercises or group work. With a set time to focus on writing in a supportive environment, you will be impressed with your productivity.

Come along to one of the upcoming sessions, all held in the Adelaide Graduate Centre Seminar Room, Level 2 Schulz, North Terrace:

  • Wednesday 23 May 2018, 3-4pm
  • Wednesday 6 June 2018, 3-4pm

APR Internship Opportunities with Defence, Science and Technology Group

Australian Postgraduate Research Intern (APR Intern) have secured $28 Million from the Federal Government to help postgraduate research students engage with industry via paid internships.

APR Intern will be offering a number of internship opportunities with the Defence, Science and Technology Group (DSTG). Internships of 3-5 months provide an invaluable opportunity for postgraduate research students to utilise their technical skills and knowledge to help industry address challenges they face or to realise an opportunity.

If you are currently undertaking your PhD and are an Australian citizen and would like to find out more about the DSTG opportunities, it is recommended that you attend the information session on Wednesday 23 May at 2:10pm in Room 122, Hartley Building (adjacent Schulz), North Terrace Campus. .

2019 NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships

The NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships scheme funds successful applicants to attain a research based postgraduate degree in a Doctor of Philosophy or a Masters Degree.

Wellcome Trust Bursaries

The Wellcome Trust, GB invites applications for its genome informatics bursaries. These provide financial assistance for PhD students attending the genome informatics conference, to be held in September 2018 in Cambridge. Bursaries cover up to 50 per cent of the registration fee.

Hans-Jurgen and Marianne Ohff Research Grants

These grants have been established by Hans-Jürgen & Marianne Ohff to support postgraduate research students to undertake study and/or fieldwork at a German-speaking university or research institution.

Students enrolled in postgraduate research programs at the ³ÉÈË´óƬ and who have had their candidature confirmed, are eligible to apply for Grants to undertake study and/or fieldwork at a German-speaking university or research institution. Activities funded by the Grant may include:

  • Research field work or a short study program
  • Internships and related industry placements
  • Conference presentations and attendance

Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit, purpose of requested Grant, essential nature of the travel to the scholar's research project, expected outcomes, reason for choosing particular University or institution, and how the Grant would strengthen links between the host institution and ³ÉÈË´óƬ.  Rules and the application form can be viewed on the Research Scholarships Website.

Integrated Bridging Program – Research (IBP-R)

The current group of 60 students have been attending the program since March and it has been good to see the development of strong collegiate links take place over the past few months. Levels of increased confidence and research communication skills have also been evident as the weeks have passed by.

Students are currently preparing for their practice seminar presentations which will be held in the coming weeks. As these sessions have a strong emphasis on peer feedback, building these skills is also an important part of our preparation sessions.

There are only 4 more weeks of lecture and seminar sessions to go for Program 1, 2018. The sessions complete in mid-June and following this students will be attending their final consultations and be completed from the program near the time of  their individual CCSP dates.

Visitor from University of Nottingham, UK

Dr Jane Wellens, Head of the Graduate School, University of Nottingham visited Adelaide on 20 April 2018. Dr Wellens met with the Dean of Graduate Studies and colleagues at the AGC, to discuss further collaboration opportunities between the two universities. Dr Wellens also met with inbound/outbound joint PhD candidates to talk about the program and the progress of their research.

Free and Confidential Disability Service

As a Postgraduate Student you are also eligible for assistance from the Disability Service if you have a disability or ongoing medical condition. Information about the nature of your disability is not disclosed – information obtained from you about the functional impact of the disability is shared with academic staff solely for the purpose of assisting you with your studies. Details relating to the Disability Service and the on line registration process can be found on the Disability website.
