How Can We help?

There are many ways that we can assist you with your studies.

Your Disability Advisor will identify Reasonable Adjustments based on:

  • your disability, ongoing health condition or primary carer responsibilities
  • supporting documentation
  • the specific requirements of your course/program

Your Disability Advisor will provide you with information and advice about how to negotiate Reasonable Adjustments with academic staff.

  • Common Reasonable Adjustments

    • Attendance – absence from classes on an occasional basis without requiring a medical certificate. Note: students will still need to meet any mandatory or compulsory attendance requirements, and/or hurdle requirements for all courses

    • Extensions - short extensions on individual assignments

    • Alternative Exam Arrangements (AEA) - e.g. changes to the environment, duration, or other exam conditions, to enable you to sit your scheduled exam. All AEA need to be organised in advance

    • Assistive software/ equipment - e.g. magnification, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, screen reader, infra-red receivers for hearing augmentation systems

    • Alternative formatting/ external services - e.g. captioning, transcriptions, AUSLAN interpreters

    • Campus access checks for students with mobility difficulties – e.g. checking classrooms/ teaching spaces for accessibility, providing information on accessible routes around campus, organising lift access.

    Students requiring external services, equipment, assistive software, alternative formatting or accessible classrooms are encouraged to finalise their enrolment and contact their Disability Advisor at least 4 weeks prior to the start of each semester, so that sufficient time is available to organise relevant services and supports. There may be limitations to the types of Reasonable Adjustments that can be organised once a semester has commenced.

  • Inherent requirements

    Inherent Requirements are the capabilities, knowledge and skills that are essential to achieve the core learning outcomes of a program or to satisfy curriculum requirements.

    An adjustment is not reasonable if it would:

    1. compromise the integrity of the program or course or assessment requirements and processes or
    2. remove or bypass any Inherent Requirements.
