In this activity, students will use the example of international fisheries to discover why sharing matters and how big the problem actually is.

The rewards of nursing

Year levels: Year 10 and aboveNursing is considered a hands-on profession and the rewards nurses gain from looking after people stretch far beyond just ‘helping’ them. Whether supporting care in people’s homes, hospitals or out in the community, your compassion will be valuable in maintaining your patients’ quality of life; and in return, you will share significant moments in their lives. Clinical placement is a major part of the Bachelor of Nursing degree and we teach you many communication and practical skills in the simulation centre before you go out on placement.This session will give you the opportunity to talk to staff about the Bachelor of Nursing requirements, as well as gain insight into some of the skills you will be required to perform as a student nurse.*

What can go wrong with the human body?

Explore what diseases such as heart attacks, strokes and cancer actually look like in a human body by looking at real human pathological specimens in the Vernon-Roberts Anatomy and Pathology Museum. Students will gain a great insight into the causes and complications of such diseases and the areas of anatomy, pathology and physiology. This session will also give students the opportunity to talk with some of our Health and Medical Sciences academics and learn more about the Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences degree, our research and much, much more!

STEM academy
The ˴Ƭ’s STEM Academy is an outreach program for students in Years 8-12 who are passionate about science, technology, engineering, and maths.
Delivered in schools and online, the STEM Academy aims to encourage students to study STEMthrough a range of interactive workshops, activities and events. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between high-school STEMsubjects, university degrees and how to turn their passion forSTEM into a career.

Energy, mining & resources school outreach program
The ˴Ƭ’s Energy, Mining & Resources School Outreach (EMRSO) program is a new outreach offering to excite students about the diverse range of careers in the energy, mining and resources industry and the role this sector is playing in our transition to a low carboneconomy.

Cranes and cantilevers

Duration: 45 minIn this workshop, students will be provided a brief insight into what’s involved in being a Civil and Structural Engineer. The session will focus on the design and construction of a cantilever crane and will cover a range of topics related to the design, analysis and construction of cranes and cantilever structures. Students will have the opportunity to put their newly built crane through its paces while reviewing the engineering process to adapt and improve their structure.

Duration:45 minWhat is your favourite food or drink smell and does it remind you of anything? To understand what we taste, we first need to know how we taste. In this workshop, students will learn what senses to use for descriptive analysis and how we research flavour and aroma on a chemical level.

Geophysics – finding groundwater with seismology
Capacity: 20
Duration: 50 minutes
Location: North Terrace Campus
Year levels: Year 10 and aboveWater is one of our most precious resources. How do we find groundwater using seismic methods? Geophysicists generate micro-earthquakes using a sledgehammer and measure the passage of waves though the Earth. Waves travel five times faster in water than in air, so we can find where water lies in the soil beneath our feet.

Geophysics - measuring gravity

Duration: 50 minutes

Year levels: Year 10 and aboveGeophysicists explore the composition and dynamic processes operating within the solid Earth and fluid exterior by exploiting physical fields that can be remotely sensed. Variations in gravity are used to explore for petroleum and mineral resources, monitor groundwater changes, locate faults, and monitor volcanoes. In this activity, students will measure relative changes in gravity experienced at the Earth’s surface as a result of variations in the density of rocks underfoot using a gravimeter. Students will also look at different rocks samples and measure their magnetic properties.

Let us take you on aphysics trip through the universe and stop off at some of the places we could or could not go on holiday, look at the viability of Earth analogue planets we could one day inhabit, and discuss possible jobs involved in settling on a new planet.

M&M chromatography
Capacity: 30
Duration: 50 minutes
Location: North Terrace Campus
Year levels: Year 8-9To ensure that foods do not contain more than the regulation amounts of additives, residues and contaminants, analytical methods have been developed to determine the nature and concentration of chemicals in food products. One of these analytical methods is chromatography. Students will be introduced to this technique by using it to separate food colourings and the natural components of spinach.

Year levels: Year 10 and aboveFor most compounds, the presence of impurities causes a marked decrease in the melting point and/or a broadening of the melting point range.
Pure compounds have a defined melting point and/or a narrow melting point range.
In this activity, a melting point will determine if the provided substance is pure or impure.* Subject to presenter availability.

Year levels: Year 10 and aboveVisit the University's campus observatory, and learn about how even though it is in the middle of a city, it still contributes to astrophysical research and gives opportunities to our students to learn about imaging, photometry and spectroscopy.

Optical sensors

Year levels: Years 8-10There really is more than meets the eye, but how can we see it? We are developing systems to see beyond the visible from space, to help in areas of science such as environmental monitoring, asset management and bushfire prevention. This workshop demonstrates the process and application of satellite hyperspectral imaging (and explains what those words mean) with hands on activities and interactive discussions about space, the environment and pathways to getting involved in the space industry.

Year levels: Years 8-10Learn why studying plants is so important. Discover the cellular structure of plants and view cells within walls through pre-prepared microscope slides. Students will section, stain and view their own fresh plant tissue.

Duration: 45 minJoin us for an exciting coding workshop where you'll learn to program robots for an epic robot battle! In this hands-on session, you'll dive into coding basics, creating commands to control your robot and outsmart your opponents. Your mission? To program the smartest, fastest, and most strategic robot that can knock out the competition and be the last robot standing in the arena.

Rockets, space travel and the science that makes it possible

Duration: 45 minExploring aerospace engineering and space science, this exciting activity gets students hands on, learning about the basic science and engineering principles in rocketry. Putting this knowledge

'See' waves in action

Year levels: Year 10 and aboveWaves are everywhere; we see them with sound, light, earthquakes even in space-time. The interaction of waves with objects, and even waves themselves, impact so much of the world we live in.
This workshop includes a range of activities, such as: creating waves which travel through materials, focusing sound waves to eavesdrop on whispered conversations, sound waves travelling in flammable gasses, and light interacting with itself to measure some of the smallest objects in the Universe.
These activities are really good for giving students the opportunity to “see” waves in action in a whole lot of different situations.

Submarines: discover the dark side of the force(s)

Duration: 45-60 minutes
Location: North Terrace Campus
Year levels: Year 9 and aboveHave you ever wondered what military submarines actually do at sea? How they work and what the crew members are living onboard?
In the Episode I, this workshop will first immerse you in an Australian submarine on a mission.
Then, in Episode II, we will ask silly questions on submarines… on top of yours:
- What are they for?
- Are they complicated and why?
- Are submarines only for men?
- Why is there red light sometimes on submarines
- Can we see outside?
- How do you find your way underwater?
- Do submarines remain all the time submerged in a mission?
- Where is the power coming from in a submarine? What about Internet?
- What skills do you need to design and maintain a submarine?
The Episode III will see students play a serious board game to design a submarine whilst balancing her against different laws of physics.
The post credit scene will reveal the answer of a mystery component functionality for submarines with which the students would have the session to touch and interact with.

The hidden world of microorganisms

What's in our water?
Capacity: 30
Duration: 30-45 minutes
Location: North Terrace Campus
Year levels: Year 11 and aboveDid you know water in our environment contains metals, and some of these are essential for a healthy environment while other are not? In this activity, students will use an atomic absorption spectrophotometer to see how chemists determine the levels of metals in water samples, including drinking water and runoff from a local mine. Feel free to ask about bringing along your own water samples too!

What makes spinach green?

Duration: 30 minutes
Location: North Terrace Campus
Year levels: Year 10 and aboveEveryone recognises spinach by its vivid green leaves, but have you ever stopped to think why they are green? Is it just green chlorophylls or does it also contain other natural components like carotenes and xanthophylls? How would you separate out this mixture to identify what is present? Luckily chemistry has the answer!
Students will use the technique of thin layer chromatography to determine just how many components there are in a spinach leaf extract.* Subject to presenter availability.

Zoology and evolutionary biology

Duration: 45 - 55 minThis workshop is a unique opportunity for students to learn concepts in the areas of zoology, evolutionary biology and taxonomy, through an interactive, challenging exercise where students will work in small groups and engage with our museum-quality sets of real animal specimens (preserved in resin to allow handling from all angles) to determine their evolutionary relatedness and build their own phylogenetic tree. Prizes on offer for the winning group!
