$13.5 million research win for a healthier future
Research aimed at combating breast and prostate cancer, identifying the underlying causes of early onset Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, and improving the lifetime health of embryos used in IVF 鈥 these are just some of the new projects at the 成人大片 that have won more than $13.5 million in federal funding today.
Fifteen new Project grants and one Career Development Fellowship have today been awarded to 成人大片 researchers from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
Six of these researchers will receive more than $1 million each for their potentially life-saving work:
- Professor Wayne Tilley聽(Adelaide Medical School) has been awarded more than $1 million for research into聽鈥渢he clinical significance of sex hormone crosstalk in estrogen receptor positive breast cancer鈥; and a further $946,176 for聽鈥渄ual targeting of the androgen receptor for effective and durable control of lethal prostate cancer鈥.
- Associate Professor Lisa Jamieson聽(Adelaide Dental School) has been awarded more than $1.5 million to investigate聽鈥渉uman papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal cancer in Indigenous Australians鈥.
- Dr Peter Arrow聽(Adelaide Dental School) has been awarded more than $1.4 million for studying a聽鈥渕inimally invasive approach to manage early childhood caries in Aboriginal pre-schoolers鈥.
- Associate Professor Rebecca Robker聽(Robinson Research Institute) has been awarded more than $1.1 million for聽鈥渞e-energising the preimplantation embryo to extend lifetime health鈥.
- Professor Ghil鈥檃d Zuckermann聽(School of Humanities), working with聽Professor Alex Brown聽(SAHMRI), has been awarded more than $1.1 million for聽鈥渆xamining the impact of language reclamation on social and emotional well being among the Barngarla鈥.
- Associate Professor Simon Barry聽(Robinson Research Institute) has been awarded more than $1 million for聽鈥渋dentification of the conformation dependant targets of autoimmune disease linked variation in human regulatory T cells鈥.
Among the other grants awarded, biomechanics expert聽Dr Dominic Thewlis聽has received a $425,048 Career Development Fellowship to join the 成人大片鈥檚 School of Medicine for his project,聽鈥渋mproving the functional outcomes of lower limb orthopaedic surgery鈥.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 announcement brings the total research funds awarded to the 成人大片 over recent weeks to $31.5 million, all from highly competitive funding sources.鈥
