$1.62 million for rare cancer research

A ³ÉÈË´óƬ and SAHMRI study to test new treatments for a rare and neglected blood cancer, which has no known effective treatment, has been awarded $1,619,122 from the Federal Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

$1.9 million for traumatic brain injury research

It is now recognised that traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to long-lasting disability in a subset of individuals, including persistent impairments in memory, decision making and motor function.

A ³ÉÈË´óƬ study that will investigate the prediction of risk of long-term impairment and neurodegenerative disease development following traumatic brain injury has been awarded $1,987,160 from the Federal Government’s Medical Research Future Fund’s (MRFF).

Negative impacts of cannabis use during pregnancy

The use of cannabis during pregnancy leads to poorer health outcomes for babies, according to research from the ³ÉÈË´óƬ’s Robinson Research Institute. The study found that continued use of cannabis at 15 weeks of pregnancy was associated with significantly lower birthweight, head circumference, birth length, and gestational age at birth, as well as with more frequent severe neonatal morbidity or death.

Link between rising use of antidepressants and youth suicide

New research from the ³ÉÈË´óƬ and Curtin University and has shown rates of antidepressant use and suicide by young Australians have risen sharply since 2009, raising concerns about the safety of current treatment practices, and the veracity of advice from Australian suicide prevention experts.
