Frederic Johns, was an Australian journalist and biographer.Ìý Baptised Frederick but during the war 1914-1918 he altered his name to Frederic.Ìý He was born in Houghton, Michigan, United States, educated in Cornwall and emigrated to Australia in 1884.

Johns obtained a position on the South Australian Register, and in 1906 published 'Johns's Notable Australians' which was the precursor of ‘Who’s Who in Australia’.

In 1914 Johns was appointed a member of the State Hansard staff, and later became the leader. He published a small collection of patriotic verses, 'In Remembrance' and 'A Journalist's Jottings', a collection of essays dealing mostly with well-known Australians. Johns also edited the South Australian Freemason 1920–25.

Johns died at Adelaide aged 64. He was survived by a daughter.Ìý Under his will he bequeathed £1500 to the University to found "The Fred Johns Scholarship for Biography".

Scholarships to the total value of $14,000 are offered annually and are available to staff and postgraduate students of the Faculty of Arts to write a biography of publishable standard and length on a deceased eminent Australian (not necessarily Australian born).Ìý
