Spotlight on Frank Neumann
Congratulations to Professor Frank Neumann, from the School of Computer Science, who has been awarded an ARC Future Fellowship for 2020.
Professor Neumann, who is one of the Chief Investigators in Program A, with the Integrated Mining Consortium, was recently featured in ECMS Connect, the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences’ staff newsletter.
Q. What is your role here in ECMS?
A. Professor in Computer Science and leader of the Optimisation and Logistics group.
Q. How long have you worked in ECMS/at the ³ÉÈË´óƬ?
A. Almost 10 years.
Q. What does a typical day look like for you?
A. As for most academics, there is no typical day. It’s driven by the wide range of tasks and topics around teaching and research that are part of academic life.
Q. What is your favourite thing about what you do?
A. Working with smart PhD students, Postdocs and international collaborators.
Q. What’s one thing that most people in the Faculty wouldn’t know about you?
A. I brought over my skis from Germany ten years ago (but never used them in Australia!).
Q. What inspires you about research and what is your original approach here?
A. Discovering new things that you haven’t thought about before.
Approach: Give Postdocs and PhD students the freedom and support to pursuit their own ideas and build their careers.
Q. Anything else you’d like to share?
A. Stay safe and have fun in what you’re doing.
