  • Biography/ Background

    Associate Professor Tony Hooker, B.Biotech (Hons), PhD, MARPS, MACPSEM

    Tony graduated with a PhD in Molecular Biology in 2002 from Flinders University. Tony has been a member of the Radiation Protection Branch of the South Australian (SA) Environment Protection Authority since 2007. He is currently Team Leader of the Radiation Health Group which is responsible for the licensing of all users and registration of ionising and non-ionising radiation apparatus used for scientific, industrial and medical purposes. In addition, he contributes to the administration and review of measures to maintain effective radiation protection legislation in SA and has been invited to participate in national workshops on radiation regulation by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. He provides expert advice to government, industry and the public regarding the health effects of radiation.

    Tony is currently Immediate Past President of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society (ARPS) and a member of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM). He is currently an Executive Member on the Asian and Oceanic Association for Radiation Protection (AOARP), and a member of the AOARP International Academic Advisors. He has been on organising committees for many national and international conferences. He is actively involved  in the organisation of workshops, seminars, related to radiationeducation and training. Tony is a member (radiation advisor) of the SA Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Emergency Management Committee, and the SA CBRN Scientific Advisory and training Committees.

    Prior to working with the EPA, Tony was a Research Fellow at Flinders University and undertook research funded by the US Department of Energy Low Dose Radiation Research Program into the biological effects of low dose radiation exposure as well as the biological effects of radio-protector chemicals.

    Tony has published his research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, invited to write guest editorials and has been an invited speaker at a number of International and National meetings. He holds academic status with Flinders University (School of Medicine) and the 成人大片 (School of Chemical Engineering) and has strong interests in radiation research.
