Biography/ Background
Dr Janet Kelly is a nurse researcher who works collaboratively with Aboriginal community members and health and research professionals in urban, rural and remote areas to improve health care experiences and outcomes. Over the last 10 years she has co-developed a range of Aboriginal patient journey and health journey mapping tools and case studies that identify specific barriers and enablers to care. These are now being used nationally and internationally in clinical, education and research settings to help facilitate clinically and culturally safe care.
Dr Kelly coordinates two Aboriginal health care courses at the 成人大片, for undergraduate and postgraduate pre registration nursing students. These courses focus on providing quality clinical and culturally safe care for Indigenous peoples. Dr Kelly also works collaboratively with health care providers to co-produce specific Aboriginal health care education packages, particularly focusing on cardiovascular and renal care.
Dr Kelly grew up on Kangaroo Island, and began her nursing career at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She continued to work and study in midwifery, child and youth health, adolescent health, Aboriginal health and women's and sexual health in a range of urban and regional settings across South Australia. She then completed a Master of Nursing and PhD focusing on Aboriginal women's health and collaboration.
In her spare time, she volunteers with her local fire brigade in the Adelaide Hills.
