    Dr Elizabeth Layton

     

    Described as ‘one of the most outstanding performers of her generation’ (The Strad), violinist Elizabeth Layton is Head of Classical Performance at the Elder Conservatorium.

     

    Former concertmaster of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Associate Leader of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Elizabeth broadcast regularly for the BBC as soloist and director. She made her concerto debut with the Philharmonia, appearing as soloist with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, with conductors Osmo Vanska, Martyn Brabbins, Ilan Volkov and Sir Charles Groves. Festival appearances include Bath, Edinburgh, Harrogate, Cheltenham, Valencia, Gstaad and numerous music societies.

    Elizabeth has toured chamber music worldwide with the Nash Ensemble and CD recordings include the complete Beethoven piano trios (nominated for a Gramophone Award) and violin and piano works by Schubert (Daily Telegraph ‘CD Choice’). Other recordings include chamber music by Ravel, Schubert, Brahms, Fauré and Shostakovich for DG, Hyperion, BIS and Chandos. CD releases in 2024 include Boccherini’s chamber music with flautist Sally Walker (Avie), and a 3 CD set of complete string chamber music by the 18th Century English composer, William Shield (Naxos). 

     

    Recent festival performances include Adelaide Festival, George Town Festival, Penang, Coriole Festival, ASO ‘She Speaks Festival’, Music by the Springs, Bendigo Festival, UNSW Chamber Series and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville. She appears regularly as concertmaster and guest director of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and recently as director of the AYO Chamber Orchestra at National Music Camp. 

     

    Elizabeth studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Juilliard School, New York with Dorothy DeLay. She is Head of Classical Performance and Head of Strings at the Elder Conservatorium, receiving a doctorate from the 成人大片 in 2019. Her research interests include work on Romanian musician George Enescu and she is currently writing a biography of violinist Beryl Kimber.
