Biography/ Background
Elizabeth Beckett is an Associate Professor within Adelaide Medical School, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Elizabeth teaches within the Bachelor of Health & Medical Sciences, Bachelor of Dental Surgery and the MBBS (Medicine) degree programs and is the course coordinator of two large level II physiology courses: Physiology IIA: Heart, Lung & Neuromuscular (PHYSIOL 2510) and Physiology IIB: Systems & Homeostasis (PHYSIOL 2520).
Elizabeth completed a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Physiology at The Queen's University, Northern Ireland in 2000 and was awarded a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Physiology and Pharmacology from The University of Nevada, USA in 2004. Elizabeth also has attained a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK).

Teaching Interests
Elizabeth is the course coordinator of the level II undergraduate physiology courses - Physiol IIA: Heart, Lung & Neuromuscular (PHYSIOL 2510) and Physiol IIB: Systems & Homeostasis (PHYSIOL 2520).
Physiology IIA focuses on the functional properties of neurons and the role of the nervous system in sensing information and coordinating our bodies movements and the critical importance of the heart and lungs for the appropriate delivery of oxygen to the cells and tissues of the body for cellular respiration. Physiology IIB considers the physiological systems that underpin the body's regulation of its internal environment. Themes include: the role of endocrine glands and their hormones; the function of the central and peripheral nervous systems in sensing and responding to changes in the external environment; the gastrointestinal tract in providing nutrition to the body and; the renal system in regulation of fluid and ion levels. In both courses students undertake research experiments designed to reinforce the themes covered in the course and promote a deeper understanding of research methods, ethical considerations in medical research and data processing in scientific research.

Research Interests
Elizabeth's research focuses on the autonomic regulation of, and pacemaking activities within, visceral smooth muscle (including the gastrointestinal tract and uterus) and the involvement of the neuro-immune axis in the development of pathophysiological conditions including endometriosis and gastrointestinal disorders.
Co-supervisor to: Kelsi Dodds (PhD candidate), "Neuro-immune involvement in the development of endometriosis" Discipline of Physiology, School of Medical Sciences.
Elizabeth is also interested investigating the efficacy of particular teaching approaches, including small group discovery, and the use of digital interactive resources within health science undergraduate programs.
