  • Biography/ Background

Elise Westin is the Writing Support Programs Coordinator at the 成人大片. She is also a researcher with a primary focus on contemporary Ukrainian novels that act as sites of disruption and questioning, calling into question and destabilising coloniality, particularly since the invasion of Ukraine. She is also interested in how many of these novels draw on historical literature, such as Ukrainian Romantic literature, to evoke and shape particular ideas of Ukrainian-ness. Her PhD research explored the representations of victims in Ukrainian genocide survivor literature from the 1950s to the twenty-first century, analysing how these portrayals have been shaped by trauma and evolving cultural memory.

In addition to her literary research, Elise has a strong interest in professional and business writing, having lectured in both undergraduate and postgraduate business communications. As a TESOL specialist and creative writer, she brings a diverse skill set to her teaching and research.

Her academic record includes a co-edited volume and several book chapters in reputable international publications, such as The Routledge Handbook of Global Literature and Culture in the Romantic Era. She recently collaborated on a special issue of Life Writing with a focus on trauma and memory with members of her professional network in this area. Her research has been recognised internationally, with presentations at conferences such as the International Association of Genocide Scholars and the Memory Studies Association. Elise was longlisted for the Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize and has been published in The Saltbush Review.
