  • Biography/ Background

Dr Hargroves is a dedicated, passionate, and collaborative action researcher focused on making a contribution to the world’s sustainability transition. Dr Hargroves is a Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University at the ‘Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute’ (CUSP) and an Adjunct Sustainable Development Fellow at the 成人大片. Dr Hargroves has worked on a number of demand-driven research projects with industry and government across Australia and around the world. Dr Hargroves is focused on research to inform the sustainability of the energy and transport sectors in response to the rapidly accelerating transition to distributed energy resources, such as rooftop solar, battery storage and electric vehicles. Charlie has undertaken extensive demand driven research with the ‘Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre’ (SBEnrc) and is currently focused on industry-based research projects with the ‘Renewable, Affordable, Clean Energy (RACE) for 2030 Cooperative Research Centre’ (CRC).

Dr Hargroves has worked with many of the world’s leading sustainable development experts from around the world over the last 20 years and has made a strong contribution to the field through his writing, advisory roles, and public speaking. Working with various teams Dr Hargroves has co-authored 7 books (selling over 85,000 copies in 5 languages), developed 5 comprehensive online education programs, 28 book chapters, 21 peer reviewed journal papers, 44 conference papers, and 46 industry reports, including 13 reports to the United Nations. The first book won the Australian Banksia Award for Environmental Leadership, Education and Training in 2005, and the two released in 2010 were ranked among the ‘Top 40 Sustainability Books’ in the world that year by the Cambridge Sustainability Leaders Program (‘Cents and Sustainability’ - 5th and ‘Factor 5’ - 12th). Dr Hargroves has delivered numerous high level keynote presentations and guest lectures, and co-facilitated seminars and workshops, at events and forums around the world. Since 2010 Charlie has been a Senior Researcher on 4 projects and Chief Investigator on 17 projects with a total value of $7.4m.

Dr Hargroves is an expert advisor to the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and a past member of the Club of Rome. Dr Hargroves has extensive experience working with business, university, government and civil society in Australia, United States, Europe, Middle East, South America, and Asia. Charlie completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Peter Newman on methods to achieve Carbon Structural Adjustment, looking at ‘Designing, Motivating, and Delivering an Economy-Wide Transition to Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions’.
