Teaching Interests
My teaching goal is to increase awareness about the needs for spatial evidence in environmental decision making. Without us being able to understand how environmental conditions vary in space and time (wildlife, soils, water, climate), decisions on how to manage our resources and conserve our native species will necessarily remain vague and subjective and hence open to criticism.
I coordinate three subjects related to spatial information generation and management: 'Spatial Information and Land Evaluation', 'GIS for Environmental Management', and 'GIS for Agricultural Sciences' and teach into 'Remote Sensing', 'Integrated Catchment Management' and 'Wildlife Management'.
I have a strong interest in supervision of honours and postgraduate students with a large breadth of projects dealing with evidence based decision making for natural resources management.

Research Interests
My main research interest is in evidence based decision making for natural resources management. Clearly, decision making related to environmental issues is always spatial decision making and all environmental decision support systems are also spatial decision support systems.
I specialise in GIS, spatial simulation modelling, and spatial decision support. My research relates do understanding causes of spatial heterogeneity of the environment at different spatial and temporal scales and how we can use this knowledge to increase both economic production and the integrity of our environment (i.e. biodiversity, wildlife conservation, landscape capability, soil integrity, surface and ground water quality).
Similar research methodologies can be applied to the terrestrial as well as the marine environment. Space is claimed from different interest groups for different purposes. But too often, ecological data is collected at inappropriate spatial or temporal scales and may not be too useful for the decision making process that requires using evidence towards implementing policies. This is where my research comes into play. I have led projects ranging from the management of fire in arid Australia to minimising environmental impact of fisheries. By consequently adopting a spatial viewpoint, I try to find solutions for environmental management that are based on evidence and hence reduce subjectivity. Not only does evidence based decision making imply a strong focus on spatial analysis, it is also implies interdisciplinary and my breadth of applications demonstrates the collaborative nature of my work. My career path has allowed me to work in the Alaskan Tundra, Californian Chaparral, in the Italian and Austrian Alps, in temperate and tropical forests (Germany and Northern Australia) and in arid lands (central Australia).
I have organised several conferences and conference sessions, including 'Spatially and temporally differentiated modelling of ecosystems Wallenfels, Germany, 1993 and Bolzano, Italy in 2007. I was session co-convener for 'Environmental Decision Support Systems' during the 2004 iEMSs international conference (published as a special issue in the Springer journal "Environmental Modelling and Software") and organised a session on 'Group decision and negotiation support in environmental management' during MODSIM05, Melbourne, 2005. As part of the ECOSUMMIT 2007 international conference in Beijing I organised one of the largest symposia with contributors from 6 countries under the theme 'Spatial information for a sustainable natural resources management'. I gave the keynote presentation in the Session ‘Spatial Indicators of Ecosystem Patterns and Processes’ at the MODSIM 2013. International Congress on Modelling and Simulation.
