Master of Teaching (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching program is designed to provide pre-service teachers with professional education studies, discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies and builds advanced research skills, providing graduates with a competitive edge in the teaching job market.
What will you do?
- Take courses on contemporary educational issues and social contexts.
- Build understandings of adolescent behaviour, learning and motivation.
- Learn to support student wellbeing and positive student-teacher relationships.
- Learn how to teach discipline-specific content to secondary students in schools.
- Complete three full-time supervised teaching blocks of 70 days in South Australian schools.
- Undertake a practice based research project.
Where could it take you?
This degree is accredited by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. Graduates may register to teach in South Australia, and in most cases, interstate and overseas (please check international countries for specific registration requirements relevant to those jurisdictions). An education background will also prove invaluable in a wide range of careers servicing communities outside of the classroom.

Selection Criteria
Higher Education Study | A Bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised Australian or international higher education institution. Applicants must have at least a teaching area major and a teaching area minor (or specialisation), which align with available specialist teaching areas in the Australian Curriculum and/or the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) curriculum. A teaching area major is the equivalent of a total of three-quarters of a year full time study. A teaching area minor is the equivalent to one-half year of full time study. A minimum GPA of 4.5 is required. Studies in a field that do not align with an available teaching area are not considered, regardless of the GPA. Please note the Master of Teaching (Secondary) is not available to applicants who hold a degree in Middle or Secondary Teaching from the 成人大片. Prospective students must also successfully undertake various child-safe environment training prior to commencing placement. Visit the 'Inherent requirements" webpage for further information: All students must pass both components of the Language and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). All pre-service teachers are required to undertake a Working with Children Check, screening through the South Australian Department of Human Services to ensure you are able to work with children. The School of Education will initiate your screening upon enrolment to the Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching degrees. Teaching Capabilities Statement (TCS): In accordance with national teacher education program standards, applicants must fulfil non-academic entry requirements. Applicants are required to submit a 400-600 word Teaching Capabilities Statement (TCS) which speaks to motivation to become a teacher. The statement must address three themes: * understanding of the role of a teacher * the personal and academic qualities possessed that will enable you to become an effective teacher * your attitude to learning. The statement must be in the applicant?s own words and written by the applicant without the use of artificial intelligence. Only one statement is permitted, and changes or edits cannot be made after submission. The submission is final, and the University will not provide feedback or a reassessment of a statement. The submitted statement may be scrutinised by artificial intelligence (AI) detection software and if the use of AI is detected, the University may not progress with the application. This degree provides a professional qualification that is recognised for teacher registration purposes in South Australia. In most cases the qualification is portable to other states and overseas countries.
Please be aware that in order to register to become a teacher through the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia, you will need to meet the requirements of the Board's revised English Language Proficiency Policy.
