Urban designers and landscape architects work with natural and built environments engaging with natural systems and human cultures—as a creative and contemporary practice, it is always evolving. They design and upgrade our parks, streets, squares and waterfronts. They’re responsible for creating functional, beautiful, sustainable and safe sites that enhance communities, cultivate culture and draw people in.  

The program is accredited by the Australia Institute of Landscape Architects and the Planning Institute of Australia.

What will you do?

Our Master of Planning (Urban Design) with Master of Landscape Architecture has a strong focus on practical design studies. You will:

  • explore ecological issues and the broad context of urban development
  • establish positions on current disciplinary, social and environmental issues
  • learn to work with advanced ecological and landscape technologies
  • build techniques for engaging communities in planning
  • share design studios with students across the School of Architecture and Built Environment
  • propose and complete major urban planning and landscape architectural projects.

Where could it take you?

You might:

  • work in government or private practice finding solutions to pressing societal challenges
  • begin the journey to registration as an RLA (Registered Landscape Architect)
  • collaborate with engineers, architects, policy-makers, artists and others in the design professions
  • design exterior spaces at a variety of scales and for various clients and users, both public and private, from innovative playgrounds, dynamic waterfronts, thoughtful memorials and special-use gardens to local, regional and national parks and critical infrastructure projects.

Higher Education Study A completed Bachelor of Architectural Design from the 成人大片 (or equivalent) with a GPA of 5.0 or better (out of 7.0).

Degree Structure

The program shares studios with the Master of Landscape Architecture and emphasises practical design studies as well as mainstream planning topics such as planning policy, theory and practice and planning law.

The urban development process is a central area for study. This prepares students for negotiation with developers and landowners.

Community consultation is also emphasised as a key skill in achieving successful outcomes in urban planning.

The majority of the teaching activities are also based around design studios incorporating courses in advanced ecological and landscape technologies.

Assessment

Assessment takes a number of forms including written reports and essays, short in-class exercises and oral presentations. Formal examinations are not used for student assessment. A capstone landscape architecture and urban design project allows students to demonstrate their mastery of landscape architecture and urban design through a significant supervised study.
