Director

Simon Lucey Headshot

Professor Simon Lucey

is the Director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), the ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Previously, he held key positions at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute, the autonomous vehicle company Argo AI, and CSIRO. His achievements include the 2024 AmCham Alliance Award for artificial intelligence and a Future Making Fellowship.

Professor Lucey is a scientific advisor on the Temporary AI Expert Committee, Department of Industry, Science and Resources. With 11 patents in computer vision, over 300 publications, more than 19,700 citations, and an h-index of 62, his contributions to the field are widely recognised. His research focuses on computer vision, machine learning, and robotics, drawing inspiration from pioneering AI researchers to uncover computational and mathematical models underlying visual perception.

 

Chief Scientist

Anton van den Hengel

Professor Anton van den Hengel

 is the chief scientist and founding director of AIML, alongside his roles as director of the Centre for Augmented Reasoning (CAR), Convenor of the Kingston AI Group, and a professor of computer science at the ³ÉÈË´óƬ. He has authored over 300 publications, had 8 patents commercialised, formed 2 start-ups, and has been a chief investigator of several projects gathering over $60M in external research funding.

Professor van den Hengel’s research focuses on deep learning, combining vision and language, video analysis, and medical AI. He holds a PhD and master’s in computer science, and bachelors in law and mathematical sciences.

 

Deputy directors

Dr Melissa McCradden

Dr Melissa McCradden

 is deputy director at AIML, alongside her roles as AI Director for the Women's and Children's Health Network and as a clinical research fellow in ethics of AI at AIML, supported by The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF). She is also an adjunct scientist at the SickKids Research Institute in Canada.

Dr McCradden specialises in ethical frameworks for AI in healthcare, with a focus on algorithmic bias, clinical evaluation, and integration. She holds a PhD in neuroscience and a master’s in bioethics.

Professor Minh Hoai Nguyen

Professor Minh Hoai Nguyen

 is deputy director at AIML, in conjunction with his role as a professor of computer vision at the ³ÉÈË´óƬ. Previously, he was an associate professor at Stony Brook University and worked at VinAI, a global AI research company, in Vietnam.

Professor Nguyen's research focuses on computer vision and machine learning. He holds a PhD in robotics and a bachelor’s in software engineering.
