AIML鈥檚 Co-Director Professor Anton van den Hengel was  of the Academy of Technology and Engineering () in an . 

鈥淎TSE brings together Australian experts in applied science, technology and engineering to provide impartial, practical and evidence-based advice on how to advance Australian prosperity,鈥 said Professor van den Hengel. 

鈥淧art of their mission is to make a contribution to the debate taking place in Australia about the role of science and technology in society, and in our future.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 honoured to have been admitted as a Fellow of an organisation such as this, particularly at a time when the debate in Australia is so critical to our success,鈥 he said. 

Professor van den Hengel鈥檚 particular avenue of machine learning research is about the intersection of language and image analysis. 

鈥淭hat鈥檚 a powerful place to be, because images are a form of information that occur naturally 鈥 they鈥檙e not symbolic, they鈥檙e completely real,鈥 Professor van den Hengel said.

鈥淲hereas language is an artificial and symbolic form of information that tells is a lot about the way that people think.鈥

鈥淭o be able to bring those two different kinds of information together gives us an insight into the way that the human mind works in all of its strengths and frailties,鈥 he said.
