2013 review of the year
ACVT (now AIML) Director, Prof. Anton van den Hengel reviews the year just gone.
We had a very good year in 2013, with many highlights, but if I had to pick a top 3 it would be
路 Prof Ian Reid was awarded an ARC Laureate Fellowship. This is the most prestigious fellowship in Australia, and the first ever awarded in the ICT area.
路 We were awarded an ARC Centre of Excellence. With a very strong international group of researchers we were successful in our application for an ARC CoE. This provides 7 years funding to do some very interesting work in robot vision.
路 We published 10 CVPR papers, 7 in ICCV, 1 in ICML, 3 in IJCV, and 5 in TPAMI. These are the best venues in the field, and this represents a publication rate that puts us in the best few groups in the field. NICTA, by comparison, including their groups in Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane achieved 6 CVPR, 1 ICML, 3 IJCV, zero ICCV, zero TPAMI, despite the fact that they are bigger and have more funding (which they don鈥檛 have to compete for).
