Canon Extreme Imaging Competition
CiSRA, Canon鈥檚 Australian research facility, has recently announced the launch of Canon鈥檚 new 鈥Extreme Imaging鈥 competition. This prize is open to student projects and their supervisors at Australian Universities.
CiSRA is a highly successful part of Canon Inc鈥檚 global research effort and has been so for more than 20 years. Most of the 200+ research and engineering staff are graduates of Australian universities and the strength of their technical skills and creativity has been critical to CiSRA鈥檚 success throughout that time. As a company they are well aware of the role Australian universities play in encouraging and developing imagination, intellectual rigour and a desire for excellence in the students. CiSRA believes that being part of a sustainable intellectual ecosystem in Australia requires supporting the universities in this pursuit of excellence, and for many years they have sponsored undergraduate and postgraduate prizes to this end.
With this competition they want to do more: to engage actively with the spectrum of tertiary institutions that work with imaging technologies. They want to inspire students to be interested research in these areas, and perhaps to encourage them to think of careers in this area. For these reasons CiSRA have made this prize 鈥 for a research at the intersection of imaging and technology 鈥 open to any student from any department. They hope to receive entrants from departments as diverse as medicine, mechatronics, physics, engineering, computer science and the visual arts.
The prize is also unique in another way 鈥 it rewards the winning supervisor. Research supervisors not only ask many of the important questions in a project, they also provide the inspiration and mentoring that can be the difference between a good project and a great one. CiSRA wanted to acknowledge that role, which is critical, but often under-appreciated. The prize consists of $5000 for the winning student or student group and $5000 for their supervisor. The runner up will receive a Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
