Calici Virus fatal to pet rabbits – vaccines available at the Companion Animal Health Centre
announced this week they will be releasing the RHDV1 K5 calici virus in September to control pest populations of wild rabbits.
If you have a rabbit, it is recommended that your rabbit is up-to-date with its vaccine.
The virus is spread through direct contact, fleas, and flies. During a release of the virus for pest control there is an increased risk to un-vaccinated or poorly vaccinated rabbits. Sudden death can occur 12 to 36 hours post exposure.
The Australian Veterinary Association recommends all pet rabbits receive their initial vaccines at 6-10 weeks of age. They require 2 to 3 doses two to four weeks apart. An annual booster is required to keep their immunity against this fatal disease. New recommendations, depending on the rabbit and possible exposure to the virus, may require boosters every six months. It is best to speak to one of our veterinarians to keep bunny healthy.Ìý
A treat bag will be given to each bunny! Special pricing available for multi-rabbit homes.
