The Health Equity Learning Lab Oz (HELLO) is organised by Stretton Health Equity, ³ÉÈË´óƬ, as part of the National Health and Medical Research Council funded ‘Restoring the Fair Go’ research initiative to bring together civil society, public servants, policy makers, and academics who seek to achieve policy change for a healthier and more equitable society. This HELLO webinar will feature Associate Professor David Scrimgeour AM and Michael Larkin, Senior Lecturer (Indigenous Health) who will present on the role of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) in pursuing health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
David Scrimgeour AM is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Public Health at the ³ÉÈË´óƬ and has worked in Australia and the Third World as a general practitioner and public health physician. His main professional interest has been in the health care of Australian First Nations within the spirit of self-determination, particularly in the remote Western Desert region of Western Australia, Northern Territory and South Australia, where he has worked periodically for over forty years. His book 'Remote as Ever: The Aboriginal struggle for autonomy in the Western Desert' published in 2022 tells of his experiences in the ACCHO movement (as well as the homelands movement) in these remote First Nations communities.
Michael Larkin is a Kokatha man, working presently as Senior Lecturer – Indigenous Health at the Adelaide University Medical School. He has held positions in State Government health, tertiary education and research, and the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector. Previously, Michael was the Manager of Public Health and Primary Health Care Programs at the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (AHCSA), overseeing a number of state-wide programs and port-folio areas. He also has experience working on health promotion and harm minimisation programs with Nunkuwarrin Yunti. Michael has a strong interest in Aboriginal health research and is Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Health Research Ethics Committee (AHREC).
