We have not yet seen the full health or economic effects of COVID-19 but, for many reasons the rental sector will almost certainly be where many of Australia’s big challenges sit.
Looking forward, what do we know about Australian renters? How did they fare in the pandemic? And what lessons can we take for our post-pandemic housing system?
Jointly funded by the Australian Research Council and the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, Australia’s largest dataset of tenant households and their living conditions, the Australian Rental Housing Conditions Dataset (ARHCD) was collected in mid-2020.
The ARHCD was designed to meet the needs of the research and policy community for robust, nation-wide data on housing conditions and tenant characteristics. Not only does it provide the most current and comprehensive data collection of the Australian rental sector, but the addition of a dedicated COVID-19 module also allows us important insight into the experiences and effects of the pandemic across the renter population
In advance of the public release of this dataset, we invited leading thinkers from housing, economics, policy, urban planning, and epidemiology to explore the data, and tell the pressing stories. Join our panel for the discussion, including;
