Royal treatment for animals at Adelaide Show

The thousands of animals on exhibition at the Royal Adelaide Show will be well cared for with the help of many students and staff from the 成人大片.

Final-year veterinary students, under supervision of veterinary staff, will assist with the provision of round-the-clock veterinary services.

A production animal health team will be on call for most animals including any sick sheep, cattle, goats, alpacas, pigs, farm-yard and petting animals; and an equine health and performance team will be working in tandem with Morphetville Equine Clinic to provide veterinary care to the many horses at the showgrounds.

“For the animals being exhibited, the Royal Adelaide Show is a dramatic change of environment from their usual country property,” says Head of the Professor Wayne Hein. “There is a lot of noise and activity they aren’t used to and in most cases their food and drinking water is different to what they are used to.

“There are also many animals quartered in close proximity and if there is any infectious disease, it can spread between animals very quickly.

“For the veterinary students it is a wonderful experience; it’s fast and furious and they get to care for a variety of species they wouldn’t normally see in one veterinary placement. They also learn to deal with safety aspects like handling animals among crowds and dealing with lots of animal owners.”

Also at the show will be more than 60 members of the student-run Roseworthy Campus Pig Club, taking responsibility for the cleaning, feeding and husbandry of all the commercial pigs at the Show, as well as the Club’s own pigs.

Pig Club students will enter nine pigs in the timed pig handling competition (Friday 8 September at 10 am) which is similar to an obstacle course, working in pairs to direct and handle two pigs through various tasks. The Pig Club will also help man the Agsplorer’s stand in the Pig Shed.

A further 25 animal science and veterinary students will be showing seven steers in the Led Steer competition. Since April, the students have been working with the animals and learning skills including showmanship, ring craft and animal judging. Students learn about animal handling and behaviour, nutrition, production and market specifications. The main led steer judging takes place at 9 am on Thursday 7 September.

Golden Grains Pavilion: More than 40 staff and students from the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine will be on hand at a display in the Golden Grains Pavilion, 9-4.30 daily. Show-goers will be able to try USB microscopes, make a mini terrarium, and hear about the University’s work on heat and drought tolerant crops.

AGSPLORERS: Children can take part in the fun educational #AGSPLORERS trail around the Showgrounds as part of Children’s University Adelaide, run by the 成人大片. Children will learn about country shows, grain and fodder, agriculture and farm animals. They will collect passport stamps from the ‘challenge stations’ around the Show and, on completion of the challenge, receive a Children’s University gift.
