Driverless car research launched with BMW at Ingenuity

A research collaboration working on the safety of driverless cars will be officially launched on Thursday 27 October at the opening night of the 成人大片’s annual showcase of engineering, computer and mathematical sciences student projects, .

A BMW presented to the 成人大片 will be on show at Ingenuity 2016. An Active Hybrid 3, the BMW will be fitted with a range of sensor and control technologies and used for collaborative research and education projects around autonomous vehicles.

The research collaboration is between BMW, the 成人大片 and University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg, Germany, which has already been presented with an identical car. The research in Adelaide involves the University’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Centre for Automotive Safety Research.

“Driverless car technology is expected to bring considerable benefits to both South Australia and the wider world from improved road safety and mobility, reduced emissions and improved transport efficiency – as well as the potential economic benefits from new industries and jobs,” says Professor Peter Ashman, Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

“But considerable research is needed to ensure their safety and performance. The 成人大片, thanks to BMW, now has a valuable platform for its research and development in this field.”

Marc Werner, CEO of BMW Group Australia, says the BMW Group has a strong international reputation for supporting research and development in the area of personal mobility.

The car will be unveiled at the launch of Ingenuity 2016 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, with a special gathering for industry, supported by AGL.

Ingenuity 2016 – open to the public on Friday 28 October from 9.30am-3.30pm – is an interactive expo of over 280 Honours year projects by the 成人大片’s highly talented engineering, computer and mathematical sciences students.

From a 3D bodyscanner for biomechanical research to better understanding exhaust noise, the students showcase their solutions for contemporary issues and real-world challenges across nine themes: defence and security, energy, health, innovation and research, resources, smart systems and technology, society and environment, structure and infrastructure and sustainability.

"Ingenuity 2016 is our opportunity to demonstrate just how talented and creative our students can be while solving unique technical challenges,” says Professor Ashman.

“Engineering and technology will underpin the advancement and future prosperity of our world, for instance with the driverless cars. The exhibition will give our students a chance to show some of this technology to the thousands of schoolchildren, industry and general community we expect to come through the doors at the Convention Centre.”
