Queen's Birthday honours for University staff

Tuesday, 10 June 2014

One of Australia's foremost composers and music educators, a pathologist dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of brain injury, and a leader of the Indigenous community are among this year's 成人大片 staff and affiliates to be awarded Queen's Birthday Honours.

Professor Graeme Koehne, Professor of Composition with the University's Elder Conservatorium of Music, has been made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for "distinguished service to the performing arts as a composer of chamber, concert and ballet music, and through substantial contributions as an educator and arts administrator".

Professor Koehne is one of Australia's leading composers, best known for his orchestral and ballet scores. A graduate of the 成人大片, Professor Koehne has been involved in music education for more than three decades.

Professor Peter Blumbergs, Clinical Professor of Pathology with the University's School of Medical Sciences, has been made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for "distinguished service to medicine in the field of neuropathology as an academic, researcher and author, through landmark contributions to the understanding of traumatic brain injury".

Professor Blumbergs is the former Medical Head of the Hanson Institute Centre for Neurological Diseases and is a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists Australia.

Dr Lewis O'Brien, Director of Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi (supporting Kaurna language) at the 成人大片, and Kaurna Warra Pintyandi (creating Kaurna language) has been made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for "distinguished service to the Indigenous community of South Australia as an elder and educator, and to the promotion and protection of Indigenous culture and heritage".

Dr O'Brien, known to many as "Uncle Lewis", has been an Honorary Fellow with the 成人大片 for many years. He has been a strong supporter of Indigenous culture, language and reconciliation efforts at the University, including work to support the reclamation and revival of the Kaurna language.

"These honours recognise a rich diversity of excellence at the 成人大片 - from the arts, to medical research, and linguistics and Indigenous culture," says the University's Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Warren Bebbington.

"Professor Koehne has played a vital role in the artistic fabric of South Australia and the nation. He continues to excite, delight and challenge audiences with his compositions. We are especially pleased that he has combined his musical passion with a strong sense of mentorship, inspiring new generations of composers at the Elder Conservatorium.

"Traumatic brain injury and neurological disease are of major concern to our community, whether from road accidents, sporting injuries or other means. The research conducted and led by Professor Peter Blumbergs has been critical in furthering our understanding of these conditions. He is an excellent example of the interface between clinical work and academic research.

"The University's efforts to revive and renew the Kaurna language could not have happened without the strong support of Kaurna Elders, and Dr Lewis O'Brien has been foremost among these. He has given much to the University over the years and has been a longstanding supporter of our staff and students, and we are extremely grateful for that.

"On behalf of the University community, I congratulate our Queen's Birthday Honours recipients. They are all dedicated and outstanding people in their individual fields," Professor Bebbington said.
