Theatre Guild is critics' choice

Adelaide's arts critics have honoured the 成人大片 Theatre Guild in the annual Adelaide Critics' Circle awards this week.
The Theatre Guild won one of two "Coopers", the awards for excellence in amateur theatre named for their sponsor, Coopers Brewery.
Critics nominated the Theatre Guild for its excellence as a group during 2002. The company mounted four productions in 2002 - Late Night Shopping, Amadeus, Much Ado About Nothing and Private Lives.
Theatre Guild Chairman, John Edge says the group excellence award was a satisfying finale to a very successful year, and a boost for the Guild's 65th anniversary in 2003.
"I'm very grateful to the Adelaide Critics' Circle for this honour," he says.
"It also comes at an opportune time, because we're on a serious mission that started this year to increase the quantity while building the quality of the Guild's output. We want to be in front of the public as often as possible, and to provide consistently excellent work that's also good value for money.
"This award by Adelaide's critics is a great thrill, because it confirms that we're on the right track, and will spur us to do even better."
The second Coopers Award continued the Theatre Guild connection. This award is for individual excellence, and was won by Martha Lott for her performance as Amanda in Private Lives - a Theatre Guild production, directed by Peter Go毛rs.
The Theatre Guild's 2003 season begins in March and contains five productions:
- Guilding the Lily, a home-grown Theatre Guild revue;
- Oh What a Lovely War, a celebrated piece of anti-war music theatre;
- Equus, Peter Shaffer's electrifying study of a strange obsession;
- The Cherry Orchard, Anton Chekhov's masterpiece of high comedy;
- The Ugly Man, a spine-chilling comedy of sex and murder by Brad Fraser.
