Julie Bishop tours vet school site

Federal Education Minister the will visit the 成人大片's today to view the site and plans for the University's new .

This follows the approval last week by the for the establishment of the vet school, with the first students starting in 2008.

Capital funding for the new school has come from the Federal Government ($15 million) and the State Government ($5 million) with $10 million to be invested in capital works from the University.

Ms Bishop and Federal Member for Wakefield David Fawcett will meet with University Chancellor the Hon. John von Doussa, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Fred McDougall, Faculty of Sciences Executive Dean Professor Bob Hill, Acting Head, School of Veterinary Science Professor Iain Reid, Director of Roseworthy Campus Professor Phil Hynd and staff and members of the new vet school and its advisory board.

University Chancellor the Hon. John von Doussa said: "The 成人大片 Council is very grateful for the support of the Federal Government in helping establish this exciting new venture for the University and for the State of South Australia. This new school will help address the serious shortage of rural-based vets in this state and growing areas of national importance in the animal health and agricultural industries."

There is already strong demand for entry to the vet school. Applications so far stand at 150 first preference applicants for 40 places in the University's three-year pre-veterinary Animal Science undergraduate degree starting next year. There will be 50 places a year for the postgraduate veterinary science degree starting in 2011.

Acting 成人大片 Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Fred McDougall said: "Plans for the new buildings at Roseworthy Campus are in development. They include a 'pre-clinical' building to be opened in 2009 and a 'clinical' building to be opened in 2011."

Students in the veterinary science course at the 成人大片 will have a broad training in veterinary science, and a unique focus on the needs of Australian livestock production, equine health, aquaculture and biosecurity industries. Students starting next year will use existing facilities largely at Roseworthy Campus and at the University's North Terrace Campus.
