Theoretical Physics

Physics is concerned with our universe at both the macro and micro levels. Theoretical physicists develop mathematical and computational models to explain phenomena like gravity, dark matter and new physical laws.

By majoring in theoretical physics you will:

  • study fundamental physics, ranging from Newtonian physics and electromagnetism to quantum and relativistic physics
  • use mathematical models to explore both present and developing physical theories
  • explore quantum mechanics, advanced dynamics, relativity and astrophysics
  • develop your critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • learn from international researchers in areas like nuclear and particle physics
  • take advantage of opportunities through the co-located Centre for Subatomic Structure of Matter.

Combine your critical thinking and problem-solving skills with physics knowledge and expertise to work in in scientific computing, telecommunications, space and astronomy programs, forensic science, defence, health and environmental industries, medical physics, data science applications, and in research.

The modelling and data analysis skills developed in this major are highly sought after in areas ranging from finance through to consulting careers.
