Ecology and Environmental Science

Ecosystems are a complex and delicate balance of nature. Even the slightest change can prove disruptive. Ecologists research the interrelationship between organisms and their environment and make decisions which reduce our impact on the world around us.

By studying ecology as a major, you will develop expertise in the lab and learn through extensive experience out in the field. You will learn from nationally and internationally acclaimed researchers as you:

  • study local and global ecosystems, including how plants and animals respond to environmental challenges and climate change
  • use advanced technology, including satellite imagery, GIS and spatial simulation modelling, to track ecosystems and forecast the impact of biodiversity shifts in natural systems
  • investigate the diversity of life on earth and the relationships between organisms and their environments
  • learn about plants and animals, their conservation and management, and physiology and evolution, including those in terrestrial, freshwater and marine systems
  • gain unparalleled access to the SA Museum and State Herbarium staff, samples and specimens, and research opportunities
  • take advantage of the co-located Environment Institute and Centre for Applied Conservation Science

An Ecology major prepares you for exciting careers in environmental consultancy, environmental monitoring and management, community education, ecotourism, wildlife parks, catchment management, or research and teaching. Our graduates are keenly sought after by a wide range of government agencies, regional bodies, private enterprise and universities.
