What makes locusts swarm?

Locusts are , what is it that turns the simple solitary cricket into these ravaging swarms of locusts? Professor from the University of Sydney has been studying the behaviour of crickets and has found that crowding and touching crickets on certain parts of their bodies turns them into locusts.
