Supporting schools in the new world of remote learning

The University’s Computer Science Education Research (CSER)ÌýDigital Technologies EducationÌýteam has launchedÌý​a range of learning and teachingÌýresources to support teachers during this challenging time.

TheÌýCSER Project TeamÌýhaveÌýworked with over 35,000 primary and secondary teachers across Australia over the last few years and wanted toÌýhelp teachers,ÌýstudentsÌýand parentsÌýmake a smooth transition to the world of onlineÌýand remoteÌýlearning.ÌýOver recent weeks the team haveÌýdeveloped a suite of resources to supportÌýthe teaching community.

Resources include aÌýÌýfor parents and teachers,Ìýa series ofÌýunplugged, very accessible and achievable activities for students to do at home and excitingÌýÌýactivities thatÌýstudents can try from home using a smartphone or tablet.

Dr Rebecca Vivian, Research Fellow from the CSER has produced aÌýhelpfulÌýÌýof remote learning and teamwork solutions for educators highlightingÌýtools and apps such as FlipGrid, EdPuzzle, Padlet and Piazza as well as better known ones like Slack and Facebook Live.

‘It is understandable teachers may feel overwhelmed at the moment and so we have created free and accessible resources to support teachers during this unprecedented time’, says Dr Vivian, Research Fellow,ÌýCSERÌýGroup, ³ÉÈË´óƬ.

For those new to video conferencing, the team has producedÌýÌýthat will help teachers and students to get the best results from this new mode of delivery.

Schools’ online learning policies and procedures may need reviewing in light of the fast shift to online learning and related implications so the team has producedÌýÌýschoolÌýleadership.

"There is still much more that can be done to support schools transition during this unprecedented time," says Dr Vivian.

CSER areÌýÌýwhere team members can provide support for teachers, schools and university staff and are expanding support and resources in response.
