This course is designed for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology. The course builds on earlier project management courses to provide a focus on IT project management, using two student-led projects. The course topics include project specification, IT specific methodologies, project coping, analysis tools, human factors, logic, ethics, and presentation.

Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Identify and develop solutions for small-scale information technology projects
Apply systematic and creative thinking techniques for analysis and problem solving
Apply critical thinking skills in the development of complex activities and in the provision of constructive criticism
Apply fundamental IT methods and simple algorithms in the construction of a real or simulated system solution.
Demonstrate technical competency in at least two areas of programming, system design, networking, and project management.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate, in written, visual and verbal form, in order to convey complex information to others in a way that supports decision-making.
Demonstrate teamwork, personnel management, and conflict management skills in contributing to and leading teams.

Online Learning

All lectures will be conducted in-class (and recorded) to cover important material to assist in project development. Workshop activities are interactive and practical, and are not recorded.

Learning & Teaching Modes

Lectures will be delivered in-class (also recorded and streamed). Workshop activities will be held only in-class. While the individual project work is individual, the second project is completed as on group work. Students will engage in a wide range of skills, technical and non-technical.

Students are expected to allocate 10 hours per week for study-related activities, with an additional 30 hours in total for the two project assignments. This is a total of 150 hours for the course.

Learning Activities Summary

Students will participate in lectures and workshop sessions on a weekly basis. The workshop sessions will develop skills and provide an opportunity to work on project—and assessment-related activities.

Specific Course Requirements

Despite the lack of formal pre-requisites, students are assumed to be able to code to some extent and have some awareness of information technology. No formal project management or team work experience is required.

Pitch 5% - Presentation outlining idea

Presentation - 10% - Presentation with slides showing the overall approach, MVP sketch and storyboard

Report - 15% - Written report on overall approach, MVP sketcs and storyboard

Group Project 30%:

First prototype - 10% - Presentation with slides showing the overall approach, MVP 1 (Prototype 1) and evaluation

Second prototype - 10% - Presentation with slides focusing on improvements and MVP 2 (Prototype 2)

Report - 10% - Written report on overall approach and results

Workshop engagement/attendance - 10% - Workshop activity submission - Actively participates and provides detailed verbal and written feedback

Student Feedback
