CONMGNT 1004 - Construction Safety

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2025

Safety is one of the most critical aspects of a construction project. This course provides a framework for developing a culture of safety and the management of occupational health on site. Students will study the legal obligations set in place by the Work Health and Safety Act, and best practice for the implementation of health and safety procedures and controls with specific emphasis on site safety and supervision as well as safety in design.

    Course Learning Outcomes
    1. To articulate the importance of safety on the construction site.
    2. Be aware of operating life cycle of infrastructure and its safe delivery, from safety in design through to operation.
    3. To be able to interpret legislation including: the safety act and regulations, codes of practice, roles and responsibilities.
    4. To understand the role of safety systems.
    5. To identify hazards, assess risks and apply controls for construction site scenarios
    6. To complete a Risk Assessment and Safe Work Method Statement for a construction site scenario.
    7. Develop communication skills to improve the practice of safety
    8. Complete the White Card training.

    Learning & Teaching Modes
    This course will extensively use face-to-face interactive Workshop Sessions and Workshop Group Work. In addition, an Individual Research Project and Laboratory work will be utilised along with a planned site visit if possible.  The students are also expected to undertake external White Card Training.

    Workshop Projects and Assignments of varying size will be undertaken individually and in groups throughout the intensive course. White Card training will need to be completed before the end of Week 13.

    Assessment Related Requirements
    It is required that students attend the scheduled sessions. Students who miss a session due to illness should provide a medical certificate. Assessment tasks will be submitted electronically via MyUni.

    This course has hurdle requirements.

    Meeting the specified hurdle criteria is a requirement for passing the course.  When this requirement is not met, the student will be given the possibility to resubmit the insufficient reports: however, a maximum mark equal to 50% will be given for the subject.

    Description
    Workshops (Online Quizzes, Short Answers and Assignments) Actively engage in online quizzes, short answers and assignments throughout the course.
    Participation in Workshops and Sessions Attendance to the scheduled sessions is compulsory.
    Research Project – Video Communication (Hurdle) Produce a 10-15-minute video giving a toolbox talk to your work colleagues about the upcoming job that your company has won to replace the pumps in the sewer pump station.
    Site visit There will be a site visit to identify safety controls.
    HIRAC Risk Assessment and Safe Work Method Statement Undertaking a risk assessment and developing a SWMS for high-risk construction work.
    White Card (Hurdle) Students will be required to obtain a Construction Induction Card called a White Card as part of the course.


    Submission
    Submission Format
    All submissions for the course will be electronic through the assignment feature in MyUni.

    Deadlines
    A penalty of 10% per 24 hours (or part thereof) will apply for late submissions. A late submission will only be allowed when a deferred deadline has been approved by the course coordinator prior to the due date.
    Extension requests on medical, compassionate or extenuating grounds must be requested in line with the Modified Arrangement for Coursework Assessment Policy (MACA Policy) using the associated form with appropriate documentation attached. Any requests for extensions must be communicated by email.

    The completed ’Application for Assessment Extension Form’, should be submitted electronically before the assessment deadline. Subsequently, the Course Cordinator will review the details and inform the outcome to the student.

    Students eligible for special consideration (e.g. elite athletes, students with access plans) are requested to advise the course coordinator as early as possible where alternate arrangements will be required.
