MUSEP 2103 - Music Education Performance Studies 2

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2021

Students will receive training in key skills relating to professional performance standards as an instrumentalist, alongside developing an understanding of how to develop these skills in others. They will further develop their individual skill level as practising musicians, alongside their understanding of the key pedagogical principles involved in teaching instrumental music. All students will also gain ensemble experience in one of the Conservatorium's ensembles. Through involvement in rehearsals in which students gain experience with professional ensemble directors, students will develop effective practising strategies, rehearsal discipline and creative approaches to problem solving. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of teamwork, an awareness of professional standards and expectations, and be given opportunities to build effective working relationships with colleagues. Central to the course is a focus on professional standards and expectations, with students building upon the learning established in Level I Music Education Performance Studies.

    Learning & Teaching Modes
    The course will include an exploration of issues and concepts centrally relevant to performance based music education in Australia today. Students will develop a full understanding of these through a combination of regular participatory music making opportunities, readings, and seminars.
    Workload

    Specific Course Requirements
    This subject involves active participation in music making. Please bring your instrument to all ensemble sessions.
    Small Group Discovery Experience
    All seminar sessions involve small group discovery, in which students will discover and share specialised knowledge of various instruments, ensemble grouping (eg. string quartet, brass ensemble, school choir etc). All students will have regular personal interaction with the lecturer.

    Assessment Related Requirements
    In this course, penalties apply for any absences which are not formally approved, as outlined in the Conservatorium’s Student Participation and Attendance Leave Guidelines (see following).     EXPECTATION All students enrolled in courses taught by the Elder Conservatorium of Music are expected to actively and positively participate in 100% of required rehearsals, workshops, tutorial and performances. In courses where Participation & Attendance penalties apply (as defined in the Course Outline), any student who misses more than 40% of required classes will be ineligible for assessment in that course, irrespective of the amount of leave that has been formally approved.

    LEAVE The Conservatorium recognises that extenuating circumstances may occasionally affect a student’s ability to participate in a rehearsal, workshop, tutorial or performance. In such cases Leave may, upon application using this Leave form, be approved by the relevant staff member (this could be the Head of Studies, teacher, conductor, lecturer or course coordinator as appropriate).
    Assessment Detail
    1. Demonstration of individual performance skill: performance in class of a key piece of repertoire for their chosen area of specialisation. 30%

    2. Teaching materials assignment: analysis of key pedagogical elements related to the work performed in class: 20%

    3. Assessment of ensemble performance: Students will be assessed on at least two occasions over the course of the semester. Grades will relate to their individual contribution to the level of ensemble performance and their demonstration of professional standards of ensemble etiquette: 50%


    Due to the current COVID-19 situation modified arrangements have been made to assessments to facilitate remote learning and teaching. Assessment details provided here reflect recent updates.

    Ensemble Assessment: Students will be assessed based on their participation in class ensemble related activities. This will involve part testing on two separate occasions on ensemble music (on the student’s individual instrument), which will be assessed online, either through a Zoom session or through the upload of a file. Students will also be asked to engage with analysis of scores and discussion groups.

    Students will be notified through MyUni with the details of the dates and repertoire for their part testing, and also will be notified of the participatory activities for each week of Semester.

    Solo performance and presentation: This will now be delivered online through Seminar session times, either through Zoom sessions or in a video link with the Lecturers.

  • Student Feedback

    The University places a high priority on approaches to learning and teaching that enhance the student experience.
